The weather is warming up and it is officially campfire season. Whether it be just a casual campfire with the family or getting rid of some fallen brush from winter, campfires come along with their own set of dangers. We have received numerous calls over the years of homeowners who experienced severe fire damage resulting from a campfire gone bad. Here are some tips that you can follow to prevent a disaster:
- Dig a pit away from overhanging branches
- Circle the pit with rocks
- Never leave a campfire unattended
- Keep a bucket of water and shovel nearby
- Never put anything but wood in the fire
- Do not pull sticks out of the fire
- When it's time to put the fire out, dump lots of water on it, stir it with a shovel, then dump more water on it. Make sure it is cold before leaving it unattended. If it is too hot to touch, it is too hot to leave
